The embedded dashboard editor provides your end users with the ability to directly play around with the data and dashboards. This is really powerful and brings data insights to the next level.
With the embedded editor, end users can create and share their own variant of a dashboard that you embedded in your application. For example, a team leader could make a dashboard variant, customize it to the specific needs of the use case and share that variant with the team members.
What is a dashboard variant, exactly? Unlike a copy, a variant is a user adapted dashboard, keeping the link to the original dashboard. This feature is located in the ‘Dashboard’ dropdown menu on the top right.
An end user can create as many variants as desired. It is possible to indicate the preferred variant to be used by default when viewing the dashboard. This is called favoriting and can be done by selecting the star icon, which appears to the left of the variant name in the dropdown menu. In case no variant is favorited, the original dashboard will be displayed.
In case you have the designer or owner role, you can share a specific variant via the sharing icon on the right side of that variant. The sharing modal will open where you can search for the needed users or group.
On top of that, an owner can favorite a specific variant as the default variant for those people shared with.
Note the following criteria for an end user to use dashboard variants:
Access to the Embedded Dashboard Editor
"designer" or "owner" role in the embed Authorization request
At least "use" access rights on the original dashboard and dataset(s)
With the power of variants and favoriting, end-users can customize embedded dashboards: they now have the power of the data in their own hands. If you are interested in knowing how to ensure that the embedded dashboard editor is a success in your application, take a look at our next article!
