Radar charts would be a perfect choice if you want to compare two or more categories based on different variables. Let’s see it in more detail together!
Radar chart (sometimes also called web, radial or spider chart) is widely used for multivariable comparison. It allows you to visually represent data for a high number of variables in a neat way!
When visualizing data on the radar chart each category gets its own axes. A value for each category is then plotted on these axes. Finally, those data points are simply joined as such you see intersections between categories.
Let’s look at it in detail and build a radar chart together!
The radar chart can be found underneath the ‘Special charts’ section. By drag & dropping it onto canvas, data can be added to the three dataslots 'Category’, ‘Measure’ and ‘Color’.
We will build a radar chart that visualizes examination results per course for a group of students.
Columns with data types ‘hierarchy’ would work best for this slot.
The data added to this slot defines how many axes your radar chart will have. On the example below we add Product to this slot .
Columns with data type ‘numeric’ or ‘hierarchy’ work best for this slot. It aggregates the data and plots a data point on each of the axes. Those plots are connected with a line .
We are using the Profit as a measure in our example.
Columns with data types ‘hierarchy’ are perfect for this slot.
This slot works similar to group by option. When adding data to it, multiple areas will appear on your radar chart. As such you can compare volume per category based on different attributes.
In our example we are using Companies in a color slot.
What info do we get from this chart now? We can see and compare the amount of students that passed, failed or didn’t attend a certain course.
In the setting of the chart, you can play with the fill opacity to make the area color more or less intense. Or go for rounded line to get a smooth look of the chart.
Enable points and set its size to your liking.
Also you can always be creative with your chart style or move legend to the bottom, for example.
The legend in this chart can be used to show or hide specific elements by clicking them.
